Multi-scale characterization of glaucophane from Chiavolino (Biella, Italy): implications for international regulations on elongate mineral particles

Abstract. In this paper, we present the results of a multi-analytical characterization glaucophane sample collected in Piedmont region northwestern Italy. Investigation methods included optical microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, µ-Raman Mössbauer electron probe microanalysis, environmental scanning microscopy and energy-dispersive scanning/transmission combined with spectroscopy energy-loss spectroscopy. addition to crystal–chemical from mesoscale near-atomic scale, have also conducted an extended study on morphology dimensions mineral particles. The main finding is that studying same particle population at different magnifications yields for habit, dimensions, dimensional distributions.
